Essence and Values of Studying
Environmental Biology (Case study: UNIMAID)
Environmental Biology
which is an intrinsic multi-disciplinary of Environmental Science offers a
meticulous program of study in biology related to the Environment.
It is designed to provide
students with a fundamental foundation in; Genetics of Organism, Population, Biodiversity
and Evolutionary Biology and it also explores a range of contemporary issues
which are; Conservation of Natural Resources, Biogeography and monitoring the
Ecological impact of human activity like; (Pollution, Overpopulation and Deforestation,
) and so on. This has insidiously left an indelible mark on our environment (Climate
Change, Global Warming, Ozone layer Depletion, Ozone hole, Habitat loss, Desertification
and Acid Rain.)
The 21st
century is a challenging time for those for whom the natural world is a source
of pleasure or employment. The planet is increasingly threatened by extinction
and degradation, yet new and exciting areas of traditional disciplines such as
ecology are emerging in response to these forces. This course aims to provide
students with two different elements that are crucial in equipping them to work
in this changing environment.
1.
Firstly,
we provide a sound theoretical underpinning in science and especially ecology,
a broad base in biology upon which to build specialist knowledge.
2.
Secondly,
we provide practical skills and real-world experience through field days and
residential field courses that allow the theory to be placed in context.
As an Environmental Biologist, we should be able to
have a rudimentary cognition in core scientific principles, critical reading
and writing skills, and also the ability to understand, apply and communicate
scientific concepts and results.
Career Paths or opportunities
Graduates of the Environmental Biology program will
be grounded in the fundamentals of natural science and prepared to enter
graduate programs fields such as biology (ecology & evolution, genetics,
etc.),
careers in environmental protection, research, consultancy , public health, medicine or public
policy. Students will also be prepared for careers in fields such as Conservation,
Pollution monitoring, science education, public health, international relations
and
ecosystems management by training in ecosystems biology, environmental
microbiology, pollution monitoring, ecotoxicology and environmental
biochemistry.
